This series was conceived with the mere fascination that Mayan women carry their children on their backs wrapped with a woven textile. I knew it was a fascination and well the typical Guatemalan stock photo online, but I did not know why the image stayed with me. I enjoyed my paintings, but the series was never quite finished until I understood the meaning.

I thought about adding imagery of modernity in contrast with vanishing Mayan traditions. In the end, I realized this series was never about contrast, even though the cultural contrast is what drew me to the original interest. This series is about the connectedness of a mother with her child. How we raise our children and physically carry our children may differ - but a mother's love exists across cultures. A mother wants the best for their child and will attempt to make that possible in every way - and when they are tired, they will keep going and do what they can, not for themselves, but for their children. The future may be uncertain, but what is certain is that they will lead the way and be there for their children.

A Mother's Love
